The international project “Climate-Neutral Waste Treatment in Russia” starts in the Voronezh Region. The agreement on cooperation in the implementation of the project was signed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, the Voronezh Region Government and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIC) GmbH, the Press Service of the Regional Government reported on Wednesday, May 29. As part of the agreement, GIC will analyze the waste management scheme in the region, provide recommendations for adjustments and propose solutions for rural areas at its own expense.

The Voronezh Region has become a pilot region for implementing international experience in organizing solid municipal waste management. It is also planned that the German organization will provide expert and methodological assistance in the development of the regulatory and legal framework, organize and conduct events for experience exchange, professional development, and support for demonstration projects.

The ceremony of signing the document involved Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Vladimir Loginov, Deputy Chairman of the Voronezh Region Government Sergey Chestikin, and Head of the GIC Representative Office in Moscow Yulia Grishchenkova. As Deputy Minister Vladimir Loginov stressed, the reform of the industry is aimed at achieving the strategic goal of reducing waste generation in the country. He noted that the advanced experience of solving this problem suggests the need to ensure the disposal of SMW by eco-collection, as well as utilization funds, the creation of which is being considered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia.

RIA Voronezh note for information

The implementation of the Russian-German project “Climate-Neutral Waste Management in the Russian Federation” was initiated during the bilateral consultation on environmental issues as part of the work carried out since 2012. The official Russian partner is the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, and the operator is the GIC. The concept of climate-neutral waste management is focused on the principle of a closed-cycle economy in which garbage is not simply stored but returned to the national economy as raw materials.
