Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket with Fregat upper stage and Earth remote sensing (ERS) space vehicles of Kanopus-V series No. 5 and 6 were launched from Vostochny Cosmodrome on Thursday, December 27. The engine, produced at the Voronezh Mechanical Plant, is installed at the third stage of the carrier rocket.

The space head of Fregat upper stage, 5 and 6 Canopus-B space vehicles, and 26 satellites were launched into open orbit. This launch was the last under the Russian space program in 2018 and the 17th from the Russian space cosmodromes for the year. It is also the fourth launch from the new Russian Vostochny Cosmodrome and the 72nd for Fregat upper stage.

On December 19, Soyuz-ST-A rocket with the Voronezh engine launched the French satellite CSO-1 into orbit. Earlier, Soyuz-FG carrier rocket launched Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft into orbit. The ISS-58/59 expedition included Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, CSA astronaut David Saint- Jacques and NASA astronaut Anne McClain.
