A meeting of the Council of Heads of States of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was held in Minsk on Friday, October 10, under the chairmanship of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

The implementation of interstate program “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” in Russia and Tajikistan in 2015 was discussed at the meeting together with another 16 topics.

As the press service of the CIS Executive Committee has informed, the heads of the states announced Voronezh and Kulob (a city in the Khatlon Region of Tajikistan) the CIS cultural capitals in 2015 as part of the program.

Is not yet known what exactly this status will give to Voronezh, and what obligations it will confer upon it. According to preliminary data, joint festivals, exhibitions and forums will be held in the capital of the Black Soil Region in 2015. The exchange of experiences between cultural and art figures from the CIS countries is also planned in Voronezh.

An official representative of the Voronezh Municipality told RIA “Voronezh” reporter that the respective structures of the administration will make every effort to fulfill all the requirements that are imposed on the city by this honorable status. The City Administration also expressed its hope that Voronezh residents in their turn will try to match the title of the cultural capital’s residents.
